A 70’s Coastal Contemporary Revival

Left untouched for nearly 40 years, this 70’s-era home in Mendocino County is surrounded by towering redwoods and a dramatic coastal landscape. My goal was to honor the original era by using the outdoors as the focal point, designing interiors that breathe in the natural surroundings. Rather than transform the space, I sought to enhance it with a gentle renovation, preserving its essence while adding earthy, natural materials. The existing cement structures contrast with newly sandblasted wood ceilings, and a primitive 2x4 light fixture hangs over the island, showcasing authenticity. A double swing chair of rattan in the primary bedroom faces floor-to-ceiling windows, creating a seamless connection to the outdoors. A freestanding wall of original artwork replaces the traditional headboard, bringing the primary bed closer to ocean views. The Wabi Sabi ethos is reflected in the primary bath, featuring a wooden Japanese soaking tub, subtle walnut tones, and textured stones.
